TMJ Therapy at Tennessee Orofacial Myology

Relief for Jaw Pain, Headaches, Facial Tension & Dysfunction

TMJ issues can affect every part of your day—eating, speaking, sleeping, and even breathing. At Tennessee Orofacial Myology, we take a comprehensive, root-cause approach to TMJ disorders by focusing on muscle balance, oral posture, breathing mechanics, and functional habits that influence the jaw.

Our therapy is gentle, personalized, and designed to help patients find long-term relief.

What Is TMJ / TMD?

The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) connects your jaw to your skull, allowing you to speak, chew, yawn, and swallow.
When something disrupts the joint or the surrounding muscles, it can lead to TMD (temporomandibular disorder).

TMJ problems are often rooted not just in the joint—but in muscle tension, oral posture, tongue position, stress, or airway issues.

What Does Our Treatment Look Like?

Comprehensive Evaluation

We assess:

  • Jaw movement

  • Facial muscle tension

  • Tongue mobility & posture

  • Breathing patterns

  • Swallowing patterns

  • Posture and compensations

  • Habits like clenching, grinding, or chewing patterns

We also like to use our at home sleep study equipment to get to the root cause of the issues. CBCT Cone Beams help us to get inside the skull and airway to see what is going on.

Customized Treatment Plan

Based on your evaluation, your plan may include:

  • Myofunctional therapy

  • Breathing training

  • Tongue posture retraining
